January is Social Determinants of Health Month in Michigan — and we’re lifting up how education policy is health policy.

Through our Autism Alliance of Michigan strategic initiatives (https://autismallianceofmichigan.org/education-initiatives/), we co-created the Progressive Outcomes Scale Logic Model (POSLM) toward Advancing Change in Education Systems, by centering community voice at the intersection of race and disability. In partnering with parents and advocates, we’re grounding policy solutions in real stories from Michigan families—because outcomes improve when systems reflect lived experience.
The POSLM helps us track progress toward a Whole Child Vision by focusing on four critical, interconnected drivers of equity:
Redefining accountability systems
Transforming learning environments
Investing resources equitably and effectively
Building community engagement & advocacy
Education shapes lifelong health outcomes—from access and opportunity to emotional well-being and belonging. This January, we reaffirm that advancing inclusive, transparent, and community-led education systems is essential to addressing the social determinants of health for children with disabilities across Michigan.
Change begins with listening.
Progress happens when policy is powered by people.
A healthier future is part of a healthier school system from birth through young adult life.
